Furnace Installation Questions, Answered

How much does a new furnace cost?

Every home is different, so the honest answer is that it depends on a few key factors:

  • System type: gas furnace, electric furnace, or heat pump
  • Efficiency: standard or high-efficiency, and single-stage, two-stage, or variable-speed operation
  • Size: the right capacity for your home, based on a load calculation rather than a guess
  • Installation conditions: attic access, venting, gas line, and ductwork updates
  • Scope: replacing the furnace alone or your complete heating and cooling system

Every Extreme Comfort quote includes the permit, inspection, and haul-away of your old equipment, and our No Surprises Guarantee means you’ll pay no more than the quoted price.

Should I replace my AC at the same time?

New Carrier furnace, outdoor air conditioner and thermostat available for AC & furnace installation in Dallas–Fort Worth

A complete HVAC system includes indoor and outdoor units, plus advanced air-purification options.

In most Dallas homes, the furnace and air conditioner work as one system. The furnace’s blower moves air for both heating and cooling, and the AC’s indoor coil

usually sits right on top of the furnace in the attic. Because the parts work together, replacing them at the same time often makes sense:

  • Matched efficiency: a system’s efficiency rating depends on matched indoor and outdoor components. Pairing a new furnace with an old AC can keep you from getting the performance you’re paying for.
  • One installation: replacing both in a single visit costs less in labor than two separate projects, and you’ll only have one permit and inspection.
  • Newer refrigerants: today’s air conditioners use newer refrigerants than older systems. If your AC is aging, repairs can become harder and cost more. Learn more about the new HVAC refrigerants.
  • Warranty coverage: a complete, matched system typically carries the strongest manufacturer warranty.

That said, if your AC is relatively new and in good shape, replacing only the furnace can be the smart choice. Not sure how much life your AC has left? Read how long AC units last in Texas, or get an instant quote for both a furnace-only and a complete-system option so you can compare.

Should I upgrade my air filtration when I replace my furnace?

It’s worth considering, especially if anyone in your home has allergies or asthma, or you have pets.

  • Your filter works year-round. The air handler or furnace fan moves air for both heating and cooling, so all the air in your home passes through the filter.
  • Better filters catch more. A high-efficiency media filter or a whole-house air purifier captures more dust, pollen, pet dander, and other allergens.
  • Sealed equipment keeps attic air out. New, properly sealed equipment helps keep attic dust and debris out of your airflow.

The result: cleaner, healthier air for your family all year.

Gas furnace, heat pump or dual fuel: which is right for my home?

North Texas has mild winters with occasional hard freezes, so homeowners here have more good options than in colder climates:

  • Gas furnace: produces strong, warm heat, even on the coldest nights. A good fit if your home already has natural gas service.
  • Heat pump: an all-electric system that heats and cools, and it’s very efficient during our mild winter days. On the coldest nights, it relies on backup electric heat.
  • Dual fuel (hybrid): pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace. The heat pump handles most of the season, and the furnace takes over automatically when temperatures drop. You get efficiency and strong heat when you need it.
  • Electric furnace: a simpler option for homes without gas, with a lower upfront cost but typically higher operating costs.

The right choice depends on whether your home has gas service, your utility rates, your comfort preferences, and your budget. Our technicians will walk you through the options so you can learn about how a heat pump compares to an air conditioner.

What does AFUE mean?

AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) is the percentage of fuel a gas furnace turns into heat for your home. An 80% AFUE furnace uses 80 cents of every fuel dollar for heat, while a 95% model uses 95 cents. The rest is lost through venting.

Higher-efficiency furnaces cost more upfront but use less gas every winter. Many also offer two-stage or variable-speed operation, which runs more quietly and keeps temperatures more even. Because Dallas winters are relatively mild, the right efficiency level depends on how long you plan to stay in your home and how much you heat it. We’ll help you weigh the upfront cost against your expected savings.

Considering a heat pump? Heat pumps use different ratings (SEER2 for cooling and HSPF2 for heating), and our technicians can explain them.

Are there rebates for a new furnace?

Often, yes, especially on high-efficiency and two-stage systems. Rebates can come from equipment manufacturers, utility companies, and government programs, and they change throughout the year. When you choose Extreme Comfort, we research every rebate your new system qualifies for, so you don’t leave money on the table.

You can also see our current instant cash rebates and special financing options to make a new system more affordable.

How long does a furnace last, and when should I replace it?

Extreme Comfort technician installing a new furnace in a Dallas-area attic

Most DFW furnaces live in the attic. Our technicians handle the tight spaces, ductwork, and venting so you don’t have to.

With regular maintenance, most gas furnaces last 15 to 20 years. In North Texas, the furnace’s blower also runs all summer to move air for your AC, and attic heat adds wear, so the system works harder than its heating hours suggest.

It may be time to replace your furnace if you notice:

  • Age: your furnace is 15 years old or more
  • Frequent repairs: you’re calling for service every season, or repair costs keep climbing
  • Uneven heating: some rooms stay cold while others overheat
  • Rising energy bills: your heating costs are going up without a clear reason
  • Safety concerns: a cracked heat exchanger, a yellow or flickering burner flame, or a carbon monoxide alarm

Safety first: a cracked heat exchanger can leak carbon monoxide into your home. If your CO alarm sounds, leave the house and call 911 or your gas company. Every home with a gas furnace should have working carbon monoxide detectors.

Not sure whether to repair or replace? Our technicians will give you an honest assessment. If repair is the better choice, we’ll tell you. Schedule a furnace repair visit, or get an instant quote on a new system.

What to Expect When You Replace Your Furnace

Do I need a permit to replace my furnace?

Yes. Most Greater Dallas cities require a mechanical permit for furnace and HVAC replacement. We pull the permit on every installation, and your city or county inspector checks our work when we’re done. Many HVAC companies skip this step to save money. We don’t.

How long does furnace installation take?

Most furnace replacements take a single day. Complete heating and cooling systems, or jobs that need ductwork, venting, or gas line updates, may take longer. We’ll give you a clear timeline before we start, so you know exactly what to expect.

What happens to my old furnace?

We remove and haul away your old equipment, leaving your attic and home clean.

What warranty comes with a new furnace?

New systems include the manufacturer’s parts warranty, typically extended when the equipment is registered after installation. We register it for you.

Can I finance a new furnace?

Yes. We offer special financing options, subject to approved credit, so you can spread the cost of a new system over time.
